How to play Strikers Club, from download to kickoff

Strikers Club hands you one footballer, real ball physics, and nine other humans. This walkthrough covers the whole first hour: installing the free game, picking a position, the confirmed controls, and what to actually do in your first 5v5 match.

Strikers Club is a free to play football game on Steam where every player on the pitch is a real person, including the goalkeeper. You control one footballer, not a whole team. There are no scripted animations to bail you out and no dice rolls deciding duels; the ball is a physics object and it goes exactly where you kicked it. The game entered Early Access on July 17, 2026 and sits at Mostly Positive on Steam two days later. Here is the ten minute version, then each step in detail.

  1. Download the game free on Steam. It is Windows only and about 2 GB.
  2. Play the tutorial. The launch build ships one, with example videos.
  3. Pick one position at kickoff and stay in it. Goalkeeper and defender are the friendliest starts.
  4. Learn three inputs before anything fancy: jockey on Ctrl, jump on F, camera lock on Alt.
  5. Queue 5v5 quickplay, hold your zone, and pass earlier than feels natural.

Step 1: Get in the game

There is nothing you need to buy. Strikers Club is free on Steam, nothing sold gives an exclusive gameplay advantage, and the store text confirms cosmetics can also be earned by playing. The only real requirement is a Windows PC: Steam lists 64-bit Windows 10 as the minimum with a GTX 1650 class card and 2 GB of storage, and there is no Mac, console, or mobile version. If your machine is borderline, check the full system requirements breakdown before you queue, because a physics game punishes low frame rates more than most.

Step 2: Understand what you installed

If your reference point is FIFA or EA FC, unlearn it now. You do not switch between players, you do not have AI teammates, and nothing is decided by hidden stats. The core format is 5v5 with all ten players human, formats run from 1v1 up to full 11v11, and the developer is explicit about the design:

The game is entirely physics-based with no RNG mechanics. Every outcome, every shot, every tackle, every pass, is a direct result of player input and skill.

In practice that means the ball leaves your feet when you sprint, passes need aim and power, and a bad touch is your touch. One minute of the official trailer shows the model better than any paragraph. Watch how far the ball runs from sprinting players.

Step 3: Pick your first position

The game asks you to choose a position at the start of every match, and the choice shapes your whole first session. The honest one-liners:

  • Goalkeeper is a dedicated role with its own extra mechanics set, and it is the most praised part of the game in early reviews. The play comes to you, which is why the community keeps recommending it to new players. Start with the goalkeeper guide if this is you.
  • Defender is the most forgiving outfield start. You face the play, your job is containment, and jockey mode does most of the work once you learn it.
  • Midfielder touches the ball most and passes under the most pressure. Brilliant once your passing clicks, rough before that.
  • Striker looks glamorous, but human goalkeepers punish bad shots, so it is the hardest place to feel useful on day one.

Whatever you pick, actually play it. The positions and team play guide explains who goes where in a 5v5 and why one disciplined player lifts a whole lobby.

Step 4: Learn the three inputs that matter

The full default layout is not published anywhere official yet, so the in-game keybind menu is the definitive reference. What official patch notes do confirm is exactly the set a new player needs first:

ActionKeyboardController
Jockey mode (defensive stance)Ctrl (hold)Left bumper
JumpFNot yet documented
Jockey dashCtrl + F (jockey + jump)LB + jump
Camera lockAltNot yet documented

Aiming needs no table because it is the camera itself: the launch press release says you aim your shots with the camera, and there is no target lock. Point your view where the ball should go, then commit. The controls hub keeps the full verified tables, including goalkeeper inputs, and marks everything unconfirmed instead of guessing.

Step 5: Survive your first match

Queue 5v5 quickplay, pick your position, and treat kickoff like a real game, because it is one. Strikers Club implements actual football rules: throw-ins, corners, fouls with cards, offside, and penalties, plus the advantage rule and golden goal extra time since the v0.78.0 update. That last-ditch lunge through someone’s back is a foul here, so defend on your feet. Ten minutes with the football rules guide saves several confused matches.

The biggest beginner mistake is not mechanical, it is chasing the ball. Public lobbies collapse into a swarm around the carrier, and the fix is boring: one teammate presses, everyone else holds a zone and offers a passing lane.

Your teamOpponentsBallThe first-match habit in one picture: your nearest teammate presses the carrier while you hold your zone on the far side. The moment the crowd wins or loses the ball, the free space in front of you is where the next play happens.

Two systems keep early matches sane: skill-based matchmaking arrived in v0.79.0 and needs a handful of games to place you, and a mercy rule ends quickplay matches at a five goal difference, so the occasional stomp stays short.

Step 6: Learn by watching

After two or three matches you will know which problems are yours. These two videos cover most of them, and the video library holds the rest of our verified picks.

Quick answers before you queue

Is Strikers Club free to play?

Yes. Strikers Club is a free download on Steam and the developer says it always will be. Monetization is limited to cosmetics and supporter packs, cosmetic items can also be earned through gameplay and events, and the official FAQ rules out pay-to-win outright.

Is Strikers Club multiplayer only?

Matches are multiplayer, with a human controlling every player on the pitch including the goalkeeper. There is still solo space to learn: the launch build has a tutorial with example videos plus free play and target practice modes, and the Steam page lists a Single-player category alongside multiplayer.

Does Strikers Club support controllers?

Yes, with caveats. The Steam store page lists partial Xbox controller support and full listings for PS4 and PS5 controllers including Bluetooth, alongside keyboard and mouse. No input method is marked as preferred.

Is there a tutorial in Strikers Club?

Yes. The launch build includes a tutorial with example videos, and the Community Centre gives you a no-pressure online space to practice moves and play minigames before you queue for a real match.

How long does it take to learn Strikers Club?

The inputs take about one session: the tutorial plus a match or two covers movement, jockeying, and jumping. The physics take longer. Passing has no assist, so expect your first matches to be scrappy, and give the skill-based matchmaking a handful of games to place you at the right level.
