5v5 quickplay, the heart of the game

Ten humans, one ball, real football rules. 5v5 is the format the matchmaker serves, the format the balance patches target, and the format your first hundred matches will happen in.

Every player in a 5v5 match is a person: four outfielders and a dedicated goalkeeper per side. Nobody controls a team, nobody switches to the nearest defender, and the store page promise of no RNG means the ten of you produce every outcome on the pitch. Since v0.79.0 the queue also tries to make those ten comparable in skill.

The rules of a 5v5 match

  • Real football rules apply: throw-ins, corners, fouls with yellow and red cards, offside, penalties, and free kicks all exist, with the advantage rule layered on since v0.78.0.
  • Extra time with golden goal resolves level scores after regulation (v0.78.0).
  • The mercy rule ends a quickplay match automatically at a five-goal difference (v0.79.0).
  • The double touch rule is active at this size, since it kicks in with three or more players per team (v0.74.1).
  • Positions are chosen at match start, and the goalkeeper is a real position with its own mechanics, not a rotating chore.

5v5 Quickplay: the verified facts

  • Skill-based matchmaking rating added in v0.79.0.
  • Mercy rule ends quickplay matches at a 5+ goal difference (v0.79.0).
  • Extra time with golden goal when scores are level after regulation (v0.78.0).
  • Leaving a matchmaking game counts as a loss; backfilled substitutes are protected from losses (v0.79.0).

Why five is the sweet spot

With four outfielders, every role matters and every absence shows. One player chasing the ball out of position does not weaken the shape, it deletes a quarter of it, which is why the everyone-chases-the-ball problem decides more 5v5 matches than any mechanical skill. The fix is boring: agree on a shape, hold it, and pass to feet. Our positions and team play guide covers workable 5v5 shapes in detail, and the tactics board lets you drag them out visually and share the link with your squad before queueing.

5v5 versus the other formats

Custom lobbies open every size from 1v1 duels to full 11v11, and Playtest 4 added 6v6 and 8v8 formations plus an XL stadium along the way. Those formats are excellent for specific jobs, dueling practice, big community events, but 5v5 is where matchmaking, balance attention, and the ladder foundation all live today. If your goal is improving at the game most people are playing, queue 5v5 and treat everything else as cross-training.
