Matchmaking and SBMM, how lobbies form

Ten days before launch, v0.79.0 quietly rebuilt the queue: a skill rating, leaver penalties, and backfill protection. Here is the documented system, not the conspiracy-theory version.

Skill-based matchmaking arrived in Strikers Club on July 7, 2026 with patch v0.79.0, ten days before Early Access launch. The patch note is one line, and it is the entire official description so far:

Added matchmaking rating to create a more skill-based environment with fair matches
v0.79.0 patch notes, Oddshot Games, Jul 7 2026

The same notes add one meaningful promise: the rating stats will be available for you to see at a later time, and for now the number exists only to build fair matchups. Nothing about the formula, placement, or reset cadence is published, and we do not speculate where the developer has not.

Why the leaver rules are shaped this way

Every rule above answers a specific abuse. Recording leaves as losses stops rating protection by rage-quit. Blocking re-backfill into the same match stops leave-and-rejoin laundering. Making backfills loss-free keeps the substitute pool willing, since nobody volunteers to inherit a 0-3 scoreline that counts against them. Even discipline got the same treatment: v0.80.2 closed red-card dodging via position swaps or rejoining, and v0.82.0 closed an advantage-check loophole for escaping cards. The pattern across patches is consistent, close the exploit, protect the innocent participant.

Matchmaking versus customs

All of the above applies to the quickplay queue only. Custom matches are self-organized: the browser has search and region filters, lobbies take passwords and spectators, and the mercy rule is off there by default until a proper setting ships (v0.82.0). If you want structured competition beyond quickplay today, customs plus community leagues are the route, and the developer has committed to supporting organizers with in-game features and prize backing. The missing visible ladder is tracked on the ranked page.

Population, the other half of queue health

A matchmaker is only as good as its player pool. Launch weekend peaked at 10,551 concurrent players on Steam after roughly 60,000 demo players played over half a million matches in June. Current concurrents and what they mean for queue times live on the player count page, updated with fresh numbers.
