Most games bury their cosmetic color rules in menus; Oddshot published theirs in the v0.79.0 patch notes a week before launch, alongside hair colors and the first purchasable cosmetics. The system has two moving parts, channels on items and palettes of colors, and one hard rule about team identity that everything else bends around.
Channels: Primary, Secondary, Detail
Every cosmetic exposes up to three color channels, and which channels you get depends on the item. The official examples are the clearest documentation:
| Item | Channels available | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Jersey | Detail only | Primary and secondary are always the team colors; your accent rides on top |
| Shoes | Primary, Secondary, Detail | Officially exampled as base, shoelaces, and pattern colored individually |
| Other slots | Varies per item | The notes state channel availability depends on the cosmetic |
Palettes: Item and Hair
Colors come from palettes, and there are exactly two palette types. The official unlocking rule is worth quoting verbatim because it is the part shops usually obscure:
“Once you purchase a palette, you unlock it for all cosmetic slots that have the same type (Hair = Hairstyle, Facial hair, Eyebrows, all other slots use the Item palette).”
- Free tier: a palette of basic and natural colors, including natural hair colors, usable across all your cosmetics from day one.
- Paid tiers: optional palettes adding pastel colors, neon colors, and unnatural hair colors.
- Buy once per type: a purchased palette unlocks for every current slot of its type, so a neon Item palette colors your shoes, shorts, and accessories alike.
The team-color override
The v0.79.0 notes state that some cosmetic colors are limited to preserve team colors, and the jersey design shows how: no palette, paid or free, lets your shirt stop reading as your team’s. In a 10-player physics game where split-second passing decisionsdepend on shirt recognition, that limit is a competitive-integrity feature wearing a cosmetic system’s clothes. Team colors for player-made clubs are separately promised for a future Club update.
Using the system well
Practical advice from the launch build: set your identity in the channels the game actually shows at distance. Shoe and hair colors read constantly during play, wrist and earbud details mostly in replays and the Community Centre. Match your detail color across slots for a coherent look, and check everything in the editor’s drag-to-rotate preview (added v0.78.0) before buying, since v0.80.2’s purchase-flow rework exists precisely because early buyers wanted clearer previews. Color fixes are still landing patch by patch, v0.82.0 fixed several color application bugs, so report oddities rather than assuming intent.
